Hi everyone,
I am new in the forum and I would like some advices from you with my new tucson.

I bought a Hyundai Tucson 2010 GLS FWD Automatic (aka ix35), and just the day after picking it up I had problems with it, the automatic transmission suddenly stopped working putting me in a very dangerous situation in the middle of an intersection, after stopping at a traffic light. I know it could be worst, so, when the traffic light changed, the upcoming cars zigzagged me very dangerously.

I called to Hyundai Road assistance and they towed the car to a dealership and I got home in a taxi, very frustrated, and dissapointed of hyundai.

The people of the dealership told me that they are not going to repair the automatic transmission, they are going to replace it by a newone, as they were told by the hyundai head office in toronto.

So far the service has been excelent, they gave me a "temporary" car and they have been very receptive, they did not leave me alone. (I know they are selling and they do not want any bad publicity about security issues).

My main concern is: Even if they replace the whole automatic transmission, the issue could be in other components, I mean the TCM module or something like that, and the problem could appear in the future, also the people in the dealership are still taking training about this new car.

Do you have any recomendations for me? Should I ask for refunding my money or ask for changing that car for another one? or Should I wait until they replace the transmission? That's my dilemma.....

Thanks.

I would see what happens after they replace it. If it still screws up you should be asking for a new vehicle...but we all know that's a long shot.
Truth is, it's tough to re-gain confidence in a vehicle when it almost killed you like that!

Congratulations on your new tucson though...they look really sharp!

Hi Tucson2010 welcome to the forums you can post in the ix35 area if you want to being as you are the Numero uno to have one of the ix35's and can we please have some photo's of your vehicle please once you have it back.

As this is a completely new vehicle to both Hyundai and the garages that resell on their behalf I think they have done the right thing and when you have it back with the new transmission take it for a reasonably long drive and also some of the ones similar to that which happened when the problem occurred- This should then make you feel much better.

Unfortunate it may be Hyundai will take that gearbox to bits to see what has failed as they will not want this to happen to other new owners and in your own way as a new user you are contributing to their knowledge.

In 2004 I did this with many others when we purchased the first off the line and delivered to the UK- and yes we had issues that Hyundai eventually resolved but they did resolve them in the new ones coming off the line just before our problems were fully resolved so it proved to me that they had listened and taken action without delay on new vehicles under manufacture.

When someone buys a product that is New and unproven they do this almost as an unpaid tester of the product.
Keep a note of the time that Hyundai have your vehicle and details of what is being done to it and when you are finally as pleased as you were when you collected it ask the dealer to liase with his principles and Hyundai to propose a compensation package for the danger and inconvenience that you and your family have been put to.

Cheers

Itza

Also keep in mind, you have 30 days "buyers remorse" to return the car if you change your mind and decide to get something else. My '06 had some trac control/anti lock/4x4 problems that took them 4 all-day repair visits to find (it was a ground lug that was loose making the computers fail - not tightened at the factory). Once they found the loose wire, the car has been more or less problem free, 4 years, 110,000 km later. It is showing its age, suspension is a bit worn, transmission is irregular and cranky when its cold, fairly normal 'worn parts' stuff. Everything still works, and there are very few rattles yet... Going to be trading mine off in the summer. (I wont be getting another tucson, partly because of how much I hate the dealers in the area, and partly because of the little things that really bug me about the car)

As a hyundai 2009 tucson owner last nov 20, 2009 (almost bought the new ix 2010 tucson, thank God..) i'm already aware with the new
model but the first thing i consider is the reliability which is the 1st generation tucson is proven specially for crdi. anyway if hyundai is super
attentive on their after sales service and if replace the problem will be gone, i suggest you stick with your hyundai tucson, everyone deserves a second change.. at least hyundai don't have an issue of recalls like toyota and honda.

Cheers!!!

Hi everyone,
I got my car back, they replaced the whole transmission by a newone, and I could feel the difference. They told me that I was the first case in Canada with transmission problems in a Tucson, which is weird. (I spent a lot of hours searching in the internet and could not find any other cases like mine, so, I almost can say I believe them).

What I have to say is that the post-sale service is EXCELENT. My sales consultant was keeping me updated of everything all the time, I am very happy with the service. I will keep my ears open when driving to hear any hard gear in the transmission or something like that, which I do not believe it could happen again, one never knows.

Thanks to everyone.

As they say on computer software...always wait for version 1.1 (most bugs resolved) rather than purchasing version 1.0...

So the reverse of what you are saying Itza is that those of us who bought one of the last of the old models like me should have a thoroughly reliable and properly market-tested vehicle Let's hope I'm right.

I'mm a firm believer in the old saying,,,,,, wait for the 2nd model year and then buy it,,,,,,,,,,, the 2nd one that has all the fixes ..... or ver 1.1 as Francis said. I will be getting one, but i just gotta wait for the direct injection engine version...... I'm sure it will be along soon.

Not trying to steal your thread but since this is about transmission issues, I thought this might be a good place to post.

My wife's 2010 Tucson is having an issue with the transmission as well. It didn't do it when she first drove it, but now sometimes when she accelerates, there's a clunk that happens. Almost like when you have two gears that suddenly engage. Does anyone know if the transmission being used in the new Tucsons are brand new or have they been used in previous models. She's planning on bringing it in soon to get looked at. I'd hate for it to become a bigger problem and I definitely don't want to have what happened to Tucson2010 to happen to her.

Thanks.

The transmission is new for the new 2010 ix35/tucson and you should therefore take it straight back for a resolution take a copy of tuc2010's report above so the dealer knows your not pulling his plonker- They should bend over backwards to resolve it quickly as they will not want to be called a Toyota :) lookalike.

Yes, the 6 speed auto trans in the 2010 Tucsons are brand new, and not only new to the Tucson this year, but a new product for Hyundia as well. It is the first attempt by Hyundai to build their very own automatic transmission! Whereas most automakers buy their transmissions from an automatic transmission company that makes only transmissions, such as Aisin and Borg-Werner (Hyundai's other automatic transmissions are mostly designed and built by Aisin for example) Hyundai decided to design and build their own 6-speed transmission in their own factory (much like GM does for most of their cars). So they did, and the Tucson is the first Hyundai to have a Hyundai built trans. So, I expect MANY issues with it this first year of production! And I'll bet that anyone who brings their new 2010 Tucson in for service with a malfuntioning 6-speed auto trans will be given a new trans replacement! Just so the malfunctioning one can be sent back to Hyundai engineers for complete disassembly and examination. That's what I think.... my2cts.

Thanks for the replies. I'll be calling the dealership tomorrow to set up an appointment and have them look at it. I had no idea that this was the Hyundai's first attempt at building their own transmissions. Good thing their cars come with a 10-year warranty...

Don't then! I will tell you -This is saying sometimes used by Londoners it is a Vrb phrs. To tease someone, to pull someone's leg.(or other item one uses for urinating :) ) E.g."It's true, he offered to pay me for a brand new car. I thought he was pulling my plonker". Cf. 'plonker'.

So I meant take the details above to show that your not teasing him or making a joke about a new transmission , that it is indeed a fact that some are already faulty.

I finally got the chance to take the Tucson on to have them look at the transmission issue that we're having. Just my luck, though - they couldn't duplicate the problem. And neither could I with a mechanic in the car with me. I guess we'll just keep on driving until it happens again. The problem has become less and less, but we'd still like to figure out what's happening to it.

Sounds like you are running the box in ok- my worry would only be that you can't change the trans fluid (or so I have heard)- when next in the garage can you ask them if its a permanently sealed box or if the trans fluid can be changed please-

Cheers

Hi! New to the Forum. Got my Phantom Black IX35 FWD GL 2.0 last 14 Feb.

re your clunking noise, in case you've got an AWD Tucson, did you check that you might have set the 4wd to lock/manual. they're limited to 40kph in that mode.

It's not doing it anymore, so we're just not going to worry about it right now. Instead, we'll just concentrate on having fun with the vehicle.

Btw...we have the FWD Tucson. We live in Southern California, so an AWD version just didn't seem logical for us.

Yeah. that's the first thing i've discovered about the IX. It's a joy to drive, even with my smaller 2.0 theta II.

Since we're focusing on the tranny... is there a speed limiter on this thing? I've tried to push it past 160kph but the RPM keeps going up but the speed just ain't.

I don't know about you, but the new Tucson GLS (sans the bright metal of the limited, & in a bright color with the dark areas pronounced like the grille, & lower body) looks pretty radical to me, I'd call it "Tuff-e-Nuff"! In black from the Pix I've seen, it looks like a spider (or spyder) from the front, and we all know women don't like spiders It's not you grandpa's Oldsmobile, thats for sure!
